The story

A whole street of lanterns, and one dark house at the end.

Your child has waited all year for the Lantern Walk. Then, at the corner, your dog sits down in the snow and faces the other way, toward the house with no lights on. Your dog has never forgotten that porch, or the biscuit jar that sits on it every summer.

The walk is moving on without them. Your child has to decide: the singing and the tree, or a knock on a door that might not want company. They knock. Nothing. They nearly give up. Your dog stays on the step, sure.

What happens next is the kind of Christmas Eve a family talks about for years. We will leave that part for the book.
